THE STRAP

Our last blog talked about the treasured experiences that school provided. Fun was part of that in many ways. But we know also that these activities were part of a structured environment. That involved discipline. Discipline was front and centre to allow things to run smoothly in those days. Many people remember THE STRAP. For you younger folks, this was a device used to punish. It was a hard leather like piece that was used to hit a student on their hand. Why did people get ThE STRAP? There were many reasons. It was a society that accepted physical punishment both at school and at home. Reasons for getting it seem unbelievable in todays’s society. You could be punished for speaking out of turn, being disruptive in the class, talking back, pushing and shoving ,even chewing gum. The teacher administered the strap. You stuck out your hand and received 5 or 10 depending on how bad you were. Word got around that if you licked your hand it wouldn’t hurt as much. Even worse was if your parents found out you would get more at home.
Nostalgia invokes fond memories of the past and realistically it was only a few that ever got it. The majority of good kids saw those who got it just as bad kids. The majority liked school , their teacher, and all of the activities. They have fond memories of school.
