When a library burns down, all if the information is gone forever. When someone passesaway, their memories are gone forever as. well. So, capturing these memories through oral history is a critical step in preserving our family history and our community heritage.
History is often viewed as being those events made by Prime Ministers , Presidents, Generals, Kings and Queens. Often neglected were the everyday things said and done by “ordinary” people. . In their learning, students seem to be highly motivated when looking at primary sources or original things. Sitting down to talk to an older person fits this bill perfectly. They can hear about life from the horse abg buggy days to the space age. This could cone from parents or grandparents. Unfortunately, not many people take the time to do that. Also unfortunately, any history teachers ignore using primary sources as a learning tool.
what is a family archive? Traditionally it is associated with a family tree. But you must include family photos, artifacts, and especially memories as well, formally organized all together. That is an invaluable source for future generations of the family.
