Collecting Nostalgia – old photos

There are people who have narrowed down their nostalgia collection to old photos. Collecting old photos can be connected to the time they were produced. A little background history of the photo will clarify this.

The first commercially available photograph was the daguerreotype tin type around the 1840’s. Along with that was the development of the glass plate process. These were common in the middle of the 19th century. The roll film camera came in around 1889 , created by George Eastman and Kodak.

For the collector then, there are those who focus strictly on tin types or glass negative photos . With paper photo production, some like to collect by topic. For example, you might want photos that show weddings, hair styles, furniture in the photo, sports photos, early architecture, Victorian decor inside homes and many more . The photos of the 1890’s and Early 1900’s are particularly popular. You might retook at the photo shown in the post Welcome to my blog and have fun reminiscing. That photo of the tennis ladies is so interesting and can be interpreted in many ways.

when doing photo analysis , it is important to have a plan. Move from foreground to back ground gives focus. Cut a square out of a piece of paper representing a quarter of the photo forces focus. Have a magnifier handy. I recall seeing the image of the photographer in a mirror inside a Victoria. Living room. It was not visible with the naked eye. What a surprising discovery!
