our last blog talked about the valued experiences that school provided. Fun was a part of that in many ways. But we also mentioned that school was very structured around disc. Good discipline allowed things to run smoothly. One of the ways it was enforced was by using the strap. Realistically , only a few were made example of.
why did some students get the strap? It was socially accepted to enforce rules with physical punishment both at school and at home. In school being disruptive, talking back, pushing, shoving, and even chewing gum could result in the strap. .

The strap was mage of a hard leather-like material. The teacher administered it. You were asked to hold out your hand and ghd. Received 5 or 10 whacks depending on the offence. The word got out that if you licked your hand it might not hurt as much. As well, if your parents found out, you could get more at home.
Nostalgia usually invokes fond memories of the past. Most of the school memories of school for the majority of students was very fondly remember.

MEMORY CORNER

I remember in the 1959’s seeing a student taken to the front of the room and getting the strap in front of the class. What a lesson that was for the class. WL

I recall getting the strap for talking when I was not supposed to. I was taken to a back room and got 5 on the hand. The class outside could hear it. It was a deterrent for sure. J L
